South Australia’s state government has tasked its departments to contribute to, and report against, their first state plan towards creating more inclusive and accessible communities.

The plan, Inclusive SA, the State Disability Inclusion Plan 2019–2023 is underpinned by four essential themes:

  • Inclusive communities for all
  • Leadership and collaboration
  • Accessible communities
  • Learning and employment

To realize the state government’s goal of an inclusive and accessible South Australia, the Department of Human Services (DHS) has released its first Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP), to take an important step towards a more fair, respectful, and equitable community for South Australians living with disability.

Lois Boswell, Chief Executive of the Department of Human Services, stated that the Department had presented a plan that actively represents an across-department commitment to access and inclusion.

“DHS has committed to a variety of actions to support the government throughout the State Government’s consultation on the state arrange, comprehensive reserves,” she said.

Ms. Boswell further outlined that the areas of priority do not stop here, recognizing that the actions outlined for the next four years and beyond will continue to be reviewed and evolve with the needs of South Australians living with a disability.

While acknowledging there is a lot of work to be done to achieve the State’s vision for an accessible and inclusive South Australia, Ms. Bosworth stated that the Department’s commitment is based on respecting and prioritizing the crucial role people with disability play in shaping the fabric of our communities.
